BALA CYNWYD, PA –

BALA CYNWYD, PA – Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (BI) is proud to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the addition of the Beck Institute Center for Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy (CT-R). The addition of the Center for CT-R to the established Beck Institute has brought together two teams of expert clinicians, researchers, and educators, all dedicated to the work of Dr. Aaron T. Beck, co-founder of Beck Institute and developer of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT has been demonstrated in thousands of clinical trials to be effective in treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders, psychological problems, and medical conditions.

Guided by Beck’s cognitive theory, CT-R is evidence-based approach rooted in public health that promotes connection, purpose, and flourishing for individuals given a serious mental health diagnosis such as schizophrenia. “CT-R promotes personalized agency and empowerment. Action is based in one’s aspirations and values,” said Paul Grant, PhD, Co-director of the Center for CT-R. “We collaborate to help the person find their mission and actualize it. More often than not, this vision embodies making the world a better place, advocating for the disadvantaged, and striving for social justice.” Operationalizing recovery, resiliency, and action towards a desired life, CT-R has been adapted and flexibly applied in forensic settings, state hospitals, programmatic residences, community teams, and as individual or group therapy.

The team implements CT-R in large state and municipal systems, as well as within specific agencies and services.  Multidisciplinary staff (clinicians, direct care staff, peers, etc.) learn to better access and energize each individual’s best self, identify their valued life directions, and act every day to experience valued connections and purpose. “CT-R is not a siloed or academic approach. The spirit of CT-R can be carried out by anyone along the continuum of care. Thus, CT-R promotes inclusivity both in how we train providers and in the approach itself,” said Dr. Grant.

Across implementations, CT-R has promoted valued outcomes for individuals given a serious mental health diagnosis — more freedom and autonomy; less loneliness and more hope; a growing sense of flourishing. Dr. Grant and his team research, write, and teach about this innovative practice. Along with Dr. Aaron T. Beck, Dr. Grant and Dr. Ellen Inverso are co-authors of the forthcoming book Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy for Serious Mental Health Conditions, to be published in December 2020 by Guilford Press.
