BALA CYNWYD, PA – Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (BI) is pleased to announce the release of the third edition of Dr. Judith Beck’s textbook Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Basics and Beyond from Guilford Press. This book, previously translated into more than 20 languages, is an essential resource in the field of mental health, for both students and experienced practitioners who want to update their skills. With over 50 percent new material, the latest edition has been extensively revised and updated to reflect the most recent research and advances in the field.

With chapters on conceptualizing clients, structuring sessions, and establishing and maintaining a strong therapeutic relationship, this book explains in Dr. Beck’s characteristically direct and clear style the core techniques and essential features of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT has been shown in 2,000 peer-reviewed research studies to be effective in treating a wide range of disorders, including depression, anxiety and substance use, and has been recently adapted for use with individuals suffering from severe mental illness. CBT was developed by Dr. Beck’s father, Dr. Aaron Beck, at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s.

“Before writing this revision, I asked for feedback on the second edition from health and mental health practitioners all over the world,” said Dr. Beck of her writing process. “The responses I received were excellent and really helped me conceptualize the changes and additions I wanted to make.” One of the most important changes is the addition of recovery-oriented cognitive therapy (CT-R) principles to the traditional cognitive therapy orientation. The recovery orientation focuses on identifying clients’ values and aspirations and helping them create a sense of purpose and empowerment in their lives by taking steps each week in pursuit of their goals. Therapists help clients reach positive conclusions about themselves, others, and their future as a result of taking these positive actions and identify and reinforce their positive qualities, skills, and resources. A positive self-image, purpose, meaning, and empowerment are stressed throughout.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Basics and Beyond is designed for use by practitioners of all levels, in line with Dr. Beck’s belief that learning CBT is a lifelong endeavor. “I certainly never stop learning how to be a more effective therapist,” Dr. Beck said. “My hope is that this book will inspire readers to continue learning about CBT, wherever they are on their journey.”
