Susan M. Knell, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and adjunct assistant professor in the department of Psychological Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. She received her undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from Mount Holyoke College, and graduate degrees from the Ohio State University (MA, Developmental Psychology) and Case Western Reserve University (PhD, Clinical Psychology). She did pre- and post-doctoral training at the Neuropsychiatric Institute, UCLA. At Case Western Reserve, she teaches and supervises doctoral students. In addition to research, training and teaching positions, Dr. Knell has maintained a private practice for over 40 years, where she has provided assessment and therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Knell is known for her groundbreaking efforts combining CBT and Play therapy into a developmentally appropriate and empirically based psychotherapy for young children. She authored the book Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (1993) which has been translated and published in Italian (1998) and Turkish (2021). She is the co-author of a forthcoming book on CBPT with anxious children to be published by Guilford. She has written over 25 chapters on CBPT in edited books, lectured throughout the United States and internationally, and served as a manuscript reviewer for peer reviewed journals. She co-founded the CBPT Institute in Rome, Italy.
