CBT for Bipolar Disorder

Led by Cory Newman, PhD, ABPP, this two-day workshop will highlight the core CBT methods that have shown promise in the treatment of bipolar disorder, emphasizing the therapeutic relationship, case formulation, and interventions that build clients’ knowledge base and self-help skills. Among these important interventions are self-monitoring, psycho-education, activity moderation, rational responding, safety planning, and related homework assignments. The workshop will describe a “recovery-oriented” approach that emphasizes individual case conceptualization, that respects the clients’ goal of improving quality of life, and that takes into account the stage of their illness.

The workshop will also briefly summarize family interventions (e.g., communication skills), sleep hygiene methods, mindfulness practices to lower anxiety, and DBT skills approaches (e.g., emotion self-regulation). Attention will be paid to the importance of inter-disciplinary collaboration with practitioners who are prescribing the clients’ medications, to empathizing with clients regarding the need to take medications long term, and to helping the clients spot and modify inaccurate beliefs about medication. The goal of modifying clients’ self-stigmatic beliefs and actions will also be described.
