Teaching and Supervising CBT

Led by expert Beck Institute faculty member Donna Sudak, M.D., this experiential workshop covers cognitive behavior therapy for mental health professionals who teach and supervise mental health professionals in CBT. Participants will learn how to identify key learning needs and micro skills for CBT training, and how to effectively provide feedback to students and trainees.

Topics include how to adapt teaching to adult learners, how and why to use multiple modalities to enhance teaching and training, developing learning exercises for the core competencies in CBT, developing a CBT curriculum, methods of evaluation in supervision, the importance of deliberate practice with feedback, how to address problems in supervision, and enhancing students’ professional development as CBT clinicians.

DAY 1: Overview of Teaching CBT

  • CBT core competencies
  • Developing a CBT curriculum

DAY 2: Teaching and Supervising CBT

  • Evidence-informed supervisory practices: needs assessment, goal setting, structure and effective agenda setting
  • Conceptualization in supervision; methods of adult learning in “enriched” supervision
  • Skill-training and feedback in supervision: fostering the development of expertise

DAY 3: Supervision of CBT

  • Skill-training and feedback in supervision: fostering the development of expertise
  • Summative feedback – why it matters; mastering effective ways to convey constructive corrective information to trainees
  • Problems in supervision – handling common challenges
  • Managing supervision groups, patient selection and faculty development

The Hilton City Avenue is directly across the street, and the Courtyard Philadelphia City Avenue (formerly the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West) is about a ten-minute walk from Beck Institute. The Courtyard also offers a shuttle to Beck Institute trainees that will take you to and from our office each morning and afternoon.
