CBT for Youth

Led by expert Beck Institute faculty member Torrey Creed, Ph.D., this experiential workshop covers the essentials of cognitive behavior therapy for mental health professionals who treat children and adolescents and their families, including how to develop and use a cognitive conceptualization, how to plan treatment, and how to use a variety of techniques for youth who are depressed or anxious.

DAY 1: Overview of CBT for Youth

  • Introduction and overview of CBT
  • The general Cognitive Model
  • The role of family in the development and maintenance of beliefs and behavior
  • Case conceptualization of individuals and families
  • Cognitive models of anxiety and depression
  • Experiential exercises

DAY 2: Cognitive and Behavioral Interventions in CBT

  • Structuring sessions
  • Identifying thoughts and feelings
  • Cognitive interventions: thought records, guided discovery, cognitive restructuring and the 3 Cs
  • Experiential exercises
  • Question-and-answer session with Dr. Aaron Beck

DAY 3: Putting it all Together: Case-Conceptualization-Driven Interventions

  • Behavioral interventions: behavioral experiments, problem solving, activity monitoring, activity scheduling, graded task assignments, hierarchical exposures
  • Conceptualization of a client with depression: choosing and implementing interventions
  • Conceptualization of a client with anxiety: choosing and implementing interventions
  • Experiential exercises

The Hilton City Avenue is directly across the street, and the Courtyard Philadelphia City Avenue (formerly the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West) is about a ten-minute walk from Beck Institute. The Courtyard also offers a shuttle to Beck Institute trainees that will take you to and from our office each morning and afternoon.
